Who are Anglo-Indians?
An Anglo-Indian is a person of mixed Indian and European ancestry, historically rooted in the colonial period when Europeans—primarily the British—lived and worked in India. Over generations, these mixed-heritage families developed a distinct community with its own culture, traditions, values, and identity.
Traditionally, the term referred to people:
• With Indian ancestry on one side
• And European (mainly British) ancestry on the other
The Anglo-Indian community became known for its contributions to:
• Education and teaching
• Railways and government service
• Literature, music, food, and sports
• Social and cultural life across India
Even after Indian independence, Anglo-Indians remained a unique and vibrant cultural group, maintaining strong ties to India while spreading across the world through migration to countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and beyond.
